“A BLOODY BATTLE”
ENGLISH LEAGUE TEAM IN NEW ZEALAND TRAINER’S INDICTMENT ‘ SOME STRONG LANGUAGE (Rec.. Sept ember 10, 12.28 a.m.) Sydney, September 9. Dave Murray, who trained the last three English Rugby League teams, in a scathing indictment of New Zealand League football, says: “If a New Zealand team were brought to Sydney they would be playing a curtain-raiser within three weeks.” He added: “Do not be deluded by the results of the matches in New Zealand. The play was bad, the administration worse, and Hie refereeing atrocious. In the first Tost the majority of tlic English players refused to return to the field, but: were persuaded by the manager and captain. The Christchurch lest vas a bloody battle. Burgess had his nose smashed to pulp and to add insult to injury he was sent off the field. The New Zealand team had a free go, and they were merciless. There arc only four good players In the Dominion. Off the field the Englishmen were treated splendidly, but on it they had a dreadful time."
