AMUNDSEN’S FATE

EXPLORER BELIEVED TO BE ALIVE (Australian Press Association.) London, September 3. A message from Oslo reveals that the seaplane float has been identified beyond doubt as belonging to Captain Amundsen’s aeroplane. Nevertheless many refuse to believe that Amundsen is lost. The Norwegian “Journal of Commerce and Shipping” declares that it is highly probably that he landed on the ice on the breaking off of the float, aud urges the continuance of the search beyond September 10, when it is proposed to abandon it. Advices from Oslo to-night state that three fishing vessels report smoke from a tent close to the edge of the island during August 9 and 11. They were unable to investigate owing to mass of mooring ice.
