PROHIBITION IN AMERICA
Sir, —The secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, Mr. Murray, has failed to answer my. appeal for information regarding the position in America. I asked that, as the promotion of temperance was what we women are . concerned with in considering prohibition, he should give us the actual results in America as regards drunkenness since prohibition has been in force there for eight years and should be a good guide. Instead of doing this he makes the mistake of adopting a hostile attitude and throws out a nasty insinuation about a coincidence. It may interest Mr. Murray to know that it hurts me exceedingly to find that the only definite figures so far produced are those put forward by the Licensing Reform Association, and all against prohibition. If those figures were correct, then prohibition has not prevented intemperance in the United States. If prohibition does not prevent intemperance we must ask ourselves the question: What is the use of it —I am, etc., WOMAN VOTER. Wellington. August 30. jgir,—Mr. Murray still seems. to be beside the point. As 1 see it, this controversy arose when Mr. Murray criticised Mr. Wilford for the statement that "they passed resolutions in favour of prohibition between drinks.”- Now Mr.
Murray admits that this was probably true, at least, he quotes the Kansas City “Star,” a dry paper, which says that there' was probably considerable drinking at the Republican Convention. In view of the above it only seems fitting that the discussion be closed by an apology from Mr. Murray to Mr. Wilford. — I am, etc., YANKEE. Wellington, August 27.
