NEWTOWN AND DISTRICT SCHOOL MATTERS

Sir —I should like to ask through your widely-read paper why all this fuss about a new school to replace the present one just on the eve of an election? Having lived in this locality fcr many years I wish to protest against the action of a coterie who do not represent 20 per cent, of parents of children attending the said school, which should serve its useful purpose for years to conic? All that is necessary is a few alterations to improve the appearance of the buildings and surroundings. The western school site is an ideal one for the growing district it will serve. All the talk of “smoke and show nuisances” is ridiculous. Surely the Minister of Education and the Education Board do not propose to commit the country to unnecessary expenditure. The attendances registered at tlie Newtown School are hundreds less than previously. The suggestion to demolish this building is one that should be given short shrift by those in charge of affairs. Hoping this uncalled-for propagandist motive on the part of a few will be foiled.—l am, etc., AN INTERESTED PARENT. Wellington, September 3. P.S. —I presume the proposed western school will be a new school district.
