MOTORISTS AND ALCOHOL
MATTER FOR MAGISTRATE TO DECIDE • By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, August 3. That the law should be altered td make it an offence for a person under the influence of liquor to be in charge of a motor-car, has been urged by the South Island Motor Union. At the executive meeting last night, the Minister of Justice replied that under the existing law the question of “intoxication” was entirely a matter for the discretion of the Magistrate, and it was not necessary to prove that the driver was actually “dl’unk” within the meaning of the Police Offences Act. There might be good reason for not fettering in any way the discretion of the Magistrate, but the Minister would carefully consider the suggestion when the next amendment of the ■ Act was made.
