SCOUT NOTES

(By "Rover.”) i A meeting of cjiairmen, secretaries, and | scouters, aud, if possible, one or two mem- ■ tiers of each committee of tile six troops in the Hill district will be held in the I Khandallah Scout Hall on August 10, at ; 7.45 p.m., to meet tile Commissioner, Sir I Alfred Robin, it is desired that as many as possible be present. The business will be to introduce Mr. F. C. Gentry and present warrant as commissioner. The Commissioner and District Scoutmaster Nelson will discuss reorganisation of the troop for Hie benefit of scouting. The lately-formed Kent Terrace Presbyterian Troop held their first joy night last week. The wolf cub pack, under Mr. Fraser, and the Scouts, under A.S..M. Aitken, are progressing toward a general investiture of tenderpads and tenderfoots. Jungle dances and games preceded supper supplied by (he boys themselves. Trinity held their fourth birthday night before a large gathering of parents and supporters. This troop has increased in numbers and ellieiency, especially the pack. Four of the "Founder” Scouts were presented with their fourth year service star, while three cubs received their third year star. Several proficiency badges, including a King's Scout, cyclist’s, pathfinder's, and second all-round cords were presented by the District Comniissoiner, supported by the chairman, the Rev. Dealie, and Scoutmaster Green. Regret was expressed that cubinaster M. Boxall could not be present to receive her warrant. On July 20 about thirty of the Evan's Bay and Petone troops visited Eastbourne, and greeted excellent, recruiters. twenty boys gave I heir names in to form a new troop at Eastbourne, and a meeting has been called tor August 17 to form a committee to start the troop. The Bea Scouts are preparing a concert for September 12. One of the main attractions will be the singing of sea chanties by the various troops. Last Saturday a number of the Wellington Sea Scouts spent an enjoyable time looking over the two Japanese warships Idzumo amt Yukumo, coming away delighted with a collection of Japanese coins, postcards, autographs, visiting cards, etc., as souvenirs. Scouts have to thank Mr. Darroch (secretary of the Navy League) for obtaining the necessary permission. Lyall Bay Scouts and Cubs are still doing' well. It is the intention of this troop to conduct a fancy dress dance shortly in aid of troop funds. We are pleased to say that Cubmaster McKinley is doing well after his unfortunate accident recently. At present the cubs are in the capable hands of Troon-Leader Asheuden and I'atrol-Leader Barnes. The following have been successful in passing badges:— .Scouts Sherwood (carpenters, metal workers, first all round cord and 5-year star) , King (carpenter, second all round cords), Sando (metal workers and leatherworkers), Barrow (metal workers and heallhymanl, Murray, and K. Redmond and Patrol-Leader J. Benfield. Last Friday night the veteran Kelburn Troop celebrated its 19th annual meeting. The chairman, Mr. Martin, presented a good report and statement of accounts showing a substantial balance to credit. The library is steadily increasing. Several ladies and gentlemen were added to the committee from tlie large gathering of parents ’ present. Scoutmaster McNeil and Cubmaster Fletcher were complimented on tlie fine state of the troop. The Wolf Cub Pack illustrated the jungle dances of ”Kad’’ and "Bagheera" to the story told by th" District Commissioner, who then presented five cubs with their first star tost and two with their second star explaining the meaning of the opening of th one and both eyes of the Wolf Cub. Commissioner. Jackson encouraged the boys with a few words. Cnbmaster Meredith and Scoutmaster Middleton wore among the visitors. Supper provided by lady supporters and parents sent the boys homeward bound and happy. No one was downhearted. Tlie Wolf Cubs yelled, and the Scouts roared to show their appreciation. During tlie year one King’s Scout, one all-round-cord. 15 proficiency badges, four first-class and six second-class were gained. During the year Mrs. Hampton presented to the troop a beautifpl cup as a memorial to tier son. the Inte Scoutmaster Hampton. This cup is competed for by patrols and awarded for all-round efficiency three times each year. Tlie Hulas and ilie Tuis have each won it on one occasion. This cup Ims done much to increase tlie efficiency of tlie troop and is a constant reminder to the boys of (lie high Ideals at which oitr movement aims and which were so well exemplified in the life of I lie late scoutmaster.
