PALMERSTON’S NAME
FURTHER SUPPORT FOR CHANGE
Palmerston North, May 22. “Palmerston North (33!) miles from Auckland, and 87 from Wellington)— the largest inland town in New Zealand —a spacious and beautiful provincial centre ; is fast attaining the dignity of a city. The dnly fault one has to find with this wide, spreading place of fine buildings and shady parks, and bright flower gardens, is its inappropriate and meaningless name. ‘Manawatu’ has often been suggested ns the fitting name for the town, and would become it exceedingly well. As the metropolis of the wealthy farming district of the Manawatu plain, it could bear no more convenient and euphonius name.” So read an extract from a publication by James Cowan, copies of which were placed before a meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. The extract met with the full approval of members, the chairman, Mr. M. A. Eliott, remarking that the chamber needed no better backing in its effort to bring about the above change of name than - that contained in those lines.
“Is any further action being taken in our endeavour to get the name changed?” asked a member.
Mr. Eliott stated in reply, that it would not be long now before Palmerston would reach the status of a city, and then the matter would be taken up once more.
