MEETING OF WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the Wellington Hockey Association was held last night, the chairman (Mr. C. 8. Falconer) and the secretary (Mr. R. H. Boys) being supported by representatives from all the local clubs. > , . .

A letter was received from the N.Z.H.A. stating that hooking of sticks was permitted. This settles a point over which there has been sonic considerable controversy.

A brisk discussion ensued as to tlie advisability of challenging for the shield, which at present is held by Auckland. It was considered difficult to put a really representative team in the field, and to send them at no inconsiderable cost, to Auckland. Eventually it was decided to issue a challenge and to circularise clubs asking for nominations. Arising out of the question of relationship with the Hockey Associations in Great Britain, the chairman suggested that a history be written oj; the Wellington Club. Mr.-Morpeth was selected, as historian. . As regards the question of referees, it was agreed that, whenever possible, these should be supplied by teams having a bye- .J _ _ In connection with the withdrawal of the Wesley third-grade B team, it was decided that all teams who had played them should have their points cancelled. Some discussion arose on the problem .of transfers. The secretary, said that niany people were rather vague about the point. However, the rules definitely said that even if a player played only one game in a higher grade it would be necessary to apply for a transfer if he returned to his original grade. This referred particularly to players who played in a higher grade as substitute.. The Wellington representative team to meet the Combined Universities was the cause of considerable discussion. This match will be played on June 4. It was decided to endeavour to play it either at the Basin Reserve or Karori. Furthermore, as an additional attraction, it was agreed that a representative junior grade team should play a match on the same ground the same day. A Town v. Suburbs junior grade match was unanimously agreed upon by all present. e In the case of the Combined Universities match, Mr. Atkinson was made manager, whilst Mr. Hatch was re-elected selector, both for this match and for the coming season. For the junior grade match, Citv v. Suburbs, Mr. Butcher was nominated to act as selector for the city and Messrs, Perrin and Atkinson for the suburbs.
