HUTT VALLEY’S PROGRESS
NEW BOWLING CLUB FORMED
It is true that in New Zealand the game of bowls follows settlement just as surely as trade follows the flag. With the almost, sensational growth of settlement hi the Eastern Hutt it was only natural that: a new bowling club should arise, and the new YVoburn Club has received the lease for 21 years (with right of renewal) of an acre of land facing Oxford Terrace and Massey Avenue at a peppercorn rental from the Hutt Borough Council, the saipe land having been set aside for recreation purposes. Being an “island,” with streets all round it, the acre was too small for football or cricket, so that the Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand) and the council welcomed the proposal to form a bowling and croquet club, which would attend to its upkeep in a manner worthy of the borough. The club was formed, with Mr. George Johnson as the prime mover and Mr. Vivian Biddiford as patron, a few months ago. and has already between 70 and SO bowling members (out of a maximum of 300) and 30 croquet players, which is practically all the two lawns can take. The bowling green (120 ft. square) Ims been ploughed, levelled and sown, and already there is a beautiful sward of grass which promises a green that will be ready for opening early in October. Plans for a pavilion have been prepared free of cost by Mt'. F. YValton. and the building is to be erected free of all labour costs by Messrs. Roundhill and Ellis, who are members of the new club. . With an extremely low rental, no rates to pay and other advantages enumerated. the Woburn Bowling and Croquet Club commences its career on more favourable terms than nny club ever inaugurated in the Wellington district.
