LATE CHARLES SIMS
TRAGIC END PUZZLING PICTURES SENT TO ACADEMY ,Rec. April 18, 7.15 p.m. London, April 18. r Charles Sims’s death was a tragic end of a career which was a strange . medley of triumphs and defeats. He was found drowned in a river near Mel- ; rose Abbey, with stones in his pockets., I He left a letter to his wife and his ; hostess in Scotland. He was recognised as the most poetical painter in ; England in his day, passing from triumph to triumph, when the unhappy trouble over the King’s portrait in 1925 ‘ broke his career and made him cut him- J self off from his friends. While in? the United States, he attended many! lectures on spiritualism. Recently he unexpectedly returned in ■ order to send to the Royal Academy six physic pictures, which are expected to be the sensation of the exhibition when it opens in May. They include a picture of a small naked figure, newly ' released by death, rising into the. glorious. Unknown, as well as other puzzling designs. Sir Frank Dicksee, president of the Royal Academy, says he has never seen anything like them, and it is impossible to say what they represent. There is a difference of opinion among academicians regarding their exhibition. Some think it would be kinder to the artist not to exhibit them, but the majority seem to be in favour of their being shown. . ; * -
