THE AMERICAN TEAM - - I TILDEN TO BE CAPTAIN Philadelphia, March 12. W. T. Tilden has been named as captain of the United States Davis Cup tennis team by Mr. Joseph Wear, chairman of the Davis Cup Committee, lilden succeeds R. N. Williams, who led the team for six years. Mr. Samuels Collom. president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, has notified Tilden. Hunter. Lott, Hennessey, Van Rvu. Allison, and Jones to report at Augusta (Georgia) on March 19, for trials for the American team. Those selected will meet Mexico in the first of the American zone matches. FRENCHMEN’S LAST GAMES IN AUSTRALIA Perth, March 13. In the concluding stage of the final tennis match, Australia v. France, Brugnon'beat Patterson, 6 —4. 6—2; Crawford beat Boussus. 6 —l. I—6. 6 —l; Borotrn and Brugnon beat Patterson and Hopman. 7—5, 6-4. The final scores are: France, five rubbers, thirteen sets: Australia, four rubbers, elevon sets. ST. JOSEPH DEFEATS MARIST After a well-contested game St. Joseph defeated Mariot by a narrow margin of 13 sets and 133 games to 11 sets and 119 games. The selected players will leave Wellington on Good Friday, and will plav Hastings representatives on Easter Saturday, and on Easier Monday Wellington will meet Napier. The tourists will leave for homo on Tuesday.
