YACHTING

(By

"Nereus.”)

Betty Retiring. That next year’s Sanders Cup contest will bo held without Betty as an entrant, is now fairly apparent. It was rumoured that Betty would not take part in the cast, but that was not the case. “Bobstay,” in tho Christchurch “Sun,” states:—", . . . Mr. Andrews said

that he was quite serious when he said that neither he nor his boat would take part in the next contest. ‘I am saying so now,’ said Mr. Andrews, 'so that those who will have the responsibility of managing the contest will know where they stand. I am quite emphatic about that. I have had my 'whack,’ now, and it is only fair that some of the other fellows should have a chance. I think that by pulling my boat out. others will be induced to build, and thus create more interest in the contest.’ ”

Saturday's Cup Races. Marangi was unlucky last Saturday, when she was beaten by only 17 seconds by Windward. Until corrected times were adjusted, the race seemed to be Marangi’s, but Windward crossed the line a short 17 seconds to the good. The course is stated to be seventeen nautical miles in length, and on corrected times there was only a ' twelve minutes forty-nine seconds’ difference between the first and last yachts. At the first buoy the order was Marangi, Ailsa, Viola,' Windward, lolanthe, and Mana. This order was held practically throughout the race. The finishing order was Marangi, Ailsa, Viola. Windward, and Mana. lolanthe was carrying a new sail, which it is reported was rather much for her. She withdrew before finishing, and returned to the bay. The order at Blinker in the second class event was Miru, Rawene, and Linnet, with about twenty seconds between each; followed by Venus, Nanette, SMbird, and Muritai. In the beat up to Somes Island, Venus was first round the buoy, followed by Miru, Rawene, Nanette, Linnet, Seabird and Muritai in that order. There was a broad lead home to the finishing line, most of the boats setting spinnakers. At the finishing line. Venus was well ahead. Miru led Linnet by about a minute, with Rawene close up next. Nanette was next across, followed by Seabird, with Muritai a little further back. On corrected times the Te Ruru Cup went to Muritai, the commodore’s yacht. This was a very popular win as the boat has not won the cup previously. Worser Bay.

A new Worser Bay Takapuna which will probably be called “Nameless” is expected to come down this Saturday. Owned by Messrs. C. and B. Sang, the boat has a white enamelled bottom and varnished combings.

The launches Toroa and Mizpah will each be taking a Takanuna up to Paremata for the Easter Regatta. Towing the boats, they will leave either on the Thursday night or early on Friday morning: Paramata Easter Regatta.

Preparations are aiready ! *well in train for the regatta to be held at Paremata during Easter. The new landing stage and skids at the club house are almost completed, and all visiting boats will be assumed of safe moorings and ample storage space for gear. There will be four races for 14-footers, and a like number for Takapuna class boats, with generous cash prizes and handsome trophies for each class. In addition, the second-class boats will lie well catered for, several races having been arranged for these craft. Three dinghy races, in which boys will row for tho Buckland Rose Bowl, should also add interest to the proceedings. Altogether, the regatta promises to bo one of the best aquatic events of the year, both for the amount of racing that will take place, and for the number of boats competing.

General Notes. Kotiri was out on Sunday afternoon. Miss Blenheim, a V bottom launch, new to the boat harbour, was out for a cruise on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday Scorching Bay was visited by Muritai, Nanette, Marangi, Wairere It. lolanthe, Venus, and Nautilus. Nautilus was out on Saturday. . lolanthe was up on the slip for a clean during the course of. last week. It is probable that Tui will be at Paremata during Easter time.
