MOTORISTS’ AFFAIRS
NORTH ISLAND UNION The North Island Motor Union met last night, Air. A. J. Toogood presiding. There were also present Dr. E. Porritt, Messrs. A. Edwards, C. M. Banks, I. Wilson, R. O’Callaghan, and the secretary (Mr. H. J. Stott). It was decided to prepare a set of rules in relation to camp sites for motorists, and to recommend that they be enforced by affiliated associations. The Main Highways Board wrote stating that they could not adopt a suggestion by the union that the board complete the metalling of the main highway between Hihitahi and Waiotirti and recover the cost from the local bodies concerned. The Auckland Automobile Association asked that the union endeavour to have laid down a definite approved method of timing cars through speed traps which must be complied with before magistrates would enter a conviction. The association said that they found that very unsatisfactory methods, were sometimes used to secure convictions unfairly. The union decided to reply asking the association to suggest what methods should be adopted and to give some idea of what it required. In reply to representations made by the union asking for the painting of telegraph poles, the department advised that it had decided to paint white all poles which are considered to be a source of danger to traffic. A band of 3ft. 6in. in width was being painted on the poles commencing Ift. 6in. from the ground level. In view of the amount of travelling involved the work was being attended to as opportunity offered. The date of the half-yearlv meeting of the union was fixed for Friday, March 23.
