NELSON FRUIT SEASON
RECORD CROP OF APPLES.
Dominion Special Service.
Nelson, January 25. The apples crop in Nelson generally promises to be a record one for quantity. The excessive russeting and cracking of last yeqr is not nearly so pronounced, due principally to the better weather conditions. Early in the season dark spot appeared to be very prevalent in some localities, but the crop has been such a good one that the affected fruit in most instances has been thinned off. The prevailing spell of dry weather is causing orchardists on the light flat lands concern. The apples are not filling out as they should, and drooping i'cliage is apparent iu some quarters. A good downpour of rain would make a difference of thousands ol; cases from su?h areas. The hill orchards, where the land is heavier, are not yet feeling the absence of rain. Work with the export season will bo commenced next week when the first small shipment' of pears will be packed. This shipment it is expected will amount to 109 crates, and will bo sent away to catch the Northumberland, loading at Wellington between February 6 and 10. The apples season is coming forward very fast, a little ahead of time. .The first packings of Worcester Permains will be made about the end of next week. Gravensteins and. Scarlet Pearmains, Cbx Oranga Pippins, Favourite, are next on the list. These varieties are very much better than last year, which was a light one for them.
