EXILE ORDERED
FOR TROTSKY AND OTHER SOVIET OPPOSITIONISTS REPORT CONFIRMED BY Telegraph.—press association. Copyright. i Berlin, January 10. Soviet circles confirm the report from Moscow which says that Trotsky, Kameneff, Radek, Zinovieff, Rakovsky, and other Oppositionists have been exiled to distant provinces, including Siberia. Fifty-two Oppositionists, including Trotsky, have been ordered to be banished for three years. Each has received a pittance of nine roubles a month. Some have already been deported to Russian and Siberian wildernesses or cholera areas. It is denied that Zinovieff and Kameneff have been banished, and it is hinted, that the former was immunised by writing a bitter antiTrotskv pamphlet.. It is reported that Piatakoff, former Soviet trade representative in France, has been ordered as a punishment to go to Australia to buy wool. Piatakoff is reported ironically to have replied: “The first time I dealt with sheep was when I became opposed to the Stalinites. I am, therefore, not qualified to serve as a wool expert.’’ Trotsky boasts that only force will take him into banishment at Astrakan. ~ i EFFORT TO STOP OPPOSITION PROPAGANDA (Rec. January 11, 5.5 p.m.) Berlin, January 11. The banishment of fifty-two Oppositionists was a sequel to'the Soviet’s unsuccessful campaign to restore discipline in factories, where it was found that Opposition propaganda was too deep-rooted. The Moscow area is the worst of the lot. Secret political police are wanted to imprison offenders, but Stalin insisted on the banishment of sufficient. Among those sentenced, and their destinations, are: Pravdas, leader writer on the “Sosnovski,” and Ischenko, both to Siberia; Smirnoff, formerly Commissioner of Posts and Telegraphs, to the Transcaspian area; Vukovitch, Communist International leader, to North Dvinsk; Rakovsky, to Archangel; Smilga, chief Opposition leader, to Habirovsk. Meanwhile Trotsky remains at Moscow, talking defiance.
