A LEAP TO DEATH

SUICIDE IN WAIKATO RIVER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, January 4. In view of a number of passersby, but before any realised his intention, an unknown middle-aged man climbed over the handrail of the Hamilton railway bridge at 12.45 p.m., and, crossing the sleepers, flung himself 80 feet into the murky Waikato River below, to the horror of those who witnessed the leap. He rose tp the surface in a huddled posture, flung up his arms, and disappeared. None of the passersby took enough notice to identify him, except that he was tall, clean shaven, and was wearing a blue suit and a felt hat. Three persons previously have chosen the scene of the tragedy as a means of ending their existence, and only a few months ago a young man with suicidal intent was saved from self-destruction by the pleading cry of a young girl. Dragging operations are in progress, but the body has not yet been recovered.
