POPULATION WELLINGTON SHOWS LARGEST CITY COUNT The population of New Zealand, its dependencies, and the Mandated 'Territory of Western Samoa virtually reached the one aud a half million mark on April 1 last. Exclusive of Maoris, the population of the Dominion proper was 1,373,746, comprised of 701,774 males and 671,972 females. The Maoris numbered 64,234 — 33,564 men ana 30,670 women. Thus the total population of New Zealand proper was 1,437,980. On September 30 last this figure had risen to 1,440,415. On April 1, 1926, it was 1,409,812. In the Cook Islands and Niue on April 1, 1927, there were 7143 men and 6945 women; 523 men and 510 women in Tokelau Islands (census 1926) ; and in Western Samoa 21,975 men and 20,053 women. The grand total* amounted, therefore, to 1,495,129. Urban Areas. The estimated population of Wellington City was 101,400, and that of Auckland City 90,140. That of Christchurch Citv was 85,575 and of Dunedin City 65,480.
