BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY

NEW YEAR GATHERINGS. The New Year gatherings at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society were large and enthusiastic. On Saturday evening a social was held, there being a very largo number of men from tlie various ships in port present. Games, songs, community singing, instrumental items were indulged in till 11 p.m. Supper was served, and a very happy time brough tto a close with the singing ot “Auld Lang Syne.” . On Sunday another largo number of men were present for the sailors tea, presided over by the society s Pb. m' 5 ’ eioner and his wife, and full justice was done to the good tilings provided. A •still larger number assembled for the service, which was taken by Mr. Hobbs, of Pctone. During the service appropriate solos were rendered. A feature 01 the service was the singing of the large number of men present. Ihe Bible stuilj nt (lie conclusion of the meeting was attended by a large number of men. Supp n r was served, . and the meeting brought to a close at 10 P-m. Monday was the day looked f o rw ar“ to with pleasurable anticipation by the men, and a full muster wdro present to go to the picnic. This was held again on 4ho /rounds of Mr. Quinn at Maori Bank. After lunch was served, the time was spent in games, sports and swimming, the men being very loth to Jaaxo such a pleasant spot for town. However. everything comes to an end, and the party" left in the dusk of evening by motor buses lor the city. The du e home was a very musical one everyone joining in the singing of all the popular songs. On arrival at the rooms a social evening was held.
