“HAD TOO MANY”

SEA CAPTAIN ASSAULTS HOTEL PROPRIETOR ‘‘l had too many yesterday, and I have no recollection of what happened,’ said Oscar Edward Solvill, a sea captain, who appeared before Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court charged with assaulting '1 lionias Coltman, licensee of the Grand Hotel. Accoiding to Sub-Inspector Lander, Solvm booked a room at the Grand Hotel, and was to have left Wellington on Tuesday night. One of the hotel porters went up to his tell him it was time to go for his steamer. Accused took no notice, and later Mr. Coltman went up to tell him. Accused suddenly turned round and struck Coltman a violent blow on the chin, knocking him on to the floor and stood over him in a threatening attitude. After considerable trouble, Mr. Coltman got away from accused, after which an information was laid to the police. The blow was so severe that Coltman had to have four stitches put in the wound caused by it.

Accused asked for suppression of his name, but the request was refused. “I have no doubt that a man in your position will be thoroughly ashamed,’’ said the Magistrate, who fined Solvin £3 and ordered him to pay medical expenses. Half the fine is to go to Coltman.
