TO ADVANCE EDUCATION
ASSOCIATION TO BE FORMED IN WAIRARAPA.
Masterton, October 13.
The Masterton branch of the Teachers’ Institute is" endeavouring to bring about the formation of an association for the advancement of education, and in this connection a deputation composed of Messrs. G. T. Goldsman and G. .Fieldhouse waited upon to-night’s meeting of the Trust Lands Trust Board asking for support. . ' Mr. Fieldhouse said' that m these days of retrenchment education was most likely to be affected, and it was felt that an association was desirable in Masterton to co-ordinate the work of various educational organisations. The deputation asked that the trust be sympathetic towards the project. No grant was requested, but only that the trust would give representation on the proposed association. ®
Mr. W. H. Jackson said that it was the prime object of the trust to foster educational efforts, and he felt that the trust was in sympathy with any organisation to safeguard the interests of education.
Mr. E. G. Eton remarked that the object of the association seemed to him to be to oppose the Minister of Education in the matter of retrenchment in matters educational, and personally the speaker was not in favour of going against the Minister in what he was doing. Mr. Fieldhouse replied that the object of the association was rather to strengthen the hands of the Minister, but it was felt, however, that the association needed the support of the public that popular opinion might be made clear.
It was decided that Mr. J. L. Hughes represent tire trust at a meeting to be held in the directi m 'of forming an association.
