SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS
NINTH ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. The Wellington Society of Musicians gave its ninth concert in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last night and met with deserved success. The society continues the excellent practice of giving works which other orchestras have neglected, and last night the principal programme item was Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony. Not eveu that master craftsman ever rivalled the dignity, loftiness and skill with which he wrought the “Jupiter” Symphony. Its nickname comes from those qualities, and appears to have been awarded by common consent. Strength and boldness are in the Allegro, with its outbursts of feverish gaiety, the Andante is highly expressive, the lightness, freshness, and elasticity of movement of the Minuet are very Alozartian, while the astonishing contrapuntal skill and easy brilliance of the finale make it a never failing source of inspiration and a monument to its composer. This is a big work, one of the biggest, and the orchestra gave it well. Even more satisfactory was the Andante from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, with Airs. Eric Meier as a conscientious soloist. The “Hebrides” Overture of Mendelssohn (“Fingal’s Cave”) was very well given, and was probably the best played work of the evening. Other numbers were Schulx?rt’s “Hungarian .March,” the dainty “Loin du Bal” of Gillct, and Mascagni’s favourite “Intermezzo." Tho society had tho assistance of Signor Cesaroni, whose massive voice was well suited to the imposing ' “Qui Sdegno.” from “The Magic Flute,” and "Non piu pndrai” (“The Marriage of Figaro”). One of his best numbers was the vivid Klingemann song “When the King Went to War.” Mr. C. W. Kerry conducted capably.
