MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE, BY-LAW, AND CIVIL CASES Mr, J. H. Salmon, S.M., dealt with police cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. John Anthony Crawford, a canvasser, aged 39, who appeared on three charges of theft by failing to account for sums totalling «E 3 os. 6d., which amount he had collected on the understanding it was to be paid to Harry Farthing, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be. concurrent. Accused had been previously convicted. A remand for one week was granted in the case of Fobert William Smith, a labourer, aged 38, who admitted stealing a rug, valued at £1 10s. Accused •was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. A similar remand for sentence w flS agreed to in the case of Harold Wellington, a labourer, aged 20, who appeared before Mr. W. G. I’iddell, 8.M., charged with stealing <£l4, the property of Henry Elderton. Sub-Inspector Harvey stated that the money had been stolen from a boardinghouse in Otaki by accused, who was at present on probation. BY-LAW CASES Messrs. E. Wylie and A. Longmore, J.P.’s, dealt with by-law cases. Speeding cost Kennedy Lloyd Brown £2; Alexander Patterson, Maurice Robertson, and Francis Bernard Rowley, £1 10s. each; and Ernest Duncan and John Guy Marshall £1 each. For speeding across an intersection, Duncan was fined an extra £l, while for like offences Marshall, Patterson, Rowley, and Robertson wore each convicted and discharged. Helen Teresa Blake, George Alexander Brown, Gilbert Bruce, George Bruce Chiistie, Leonard James Evans, James David Martin Foreman, Alfred Thomas Kelly, and Charles Norman Smith were each fined XI for having no lights. John Shelley was fined half that amount for a like offence. John J. Ewing was fined £3 for dangerous driving. Clarence Joslin was fined £1 for having his number plates obscured. A similar penalty was imposed on Thomas H. Oates for permitting the use of a motor-cycle without endorsed certificates. L. E. Eglington was fined 10s. for leaving his car unattended, while Thomas Goodwin, who left.his motor-lorry more than twelve inches from the kerb, was fined half that amount. Cutting a corner resulted in Edward H. Mcßae and Herbert John Lawton being fined XI each. A like action cost Louise Reed 10s. Robert Cochrane was fined £2 on each of two charges of having used an unlicensed car. John Edward Fitzgerald <as fined half that amount on each of two charges, while Colin Hammond and Robert Clance Little were each fined £2 for one similar offence.
