ITALIAN STEAMSHIP LINESPlans of the Mussolini Government for bringing about an anialgamation of Italian steamship lines in the transatlantic trade in order to finance the construction and operation of the two 40,000-ton liners, the Rex and Dux, are meeting with strong opposition on the part of the interested companies. The argument of the Italian ship-owners, according to the Trieste correspondent of the Hansa, is that the competition which has prevailed hitherto between the independent companies has spurred private initiative to make its most successful efforts—efforts which are not to be found among the nuineious subsidised companies—because they have become too accustomed to tro sure financial aid of the State;. The Italian Government, which, ordinarily, when it has tet itself to obtain a curtain end, does not trouble itself vcrmuch about private objections, seems in ’his mstayce desirous of taking the icruples .of the shipowners against the amalgamition idea into account., MESS-TABLE GOSSIP.
