ENCOURAGING FLYING
BRITISH SUBSIDY TO AEROPLANE CLUBS
Rugby, October 9. The Air Ministry .is granting subsidies tor three years up to £2OOO per annum eacli to four additional light aeroplane clubs. Similar assistance is already given to six clubs in various parts of the country, the four new ones being the Bristol, Norwich, Nottingham, and Scottish Clubs. The basis of the subsidy is payment by results, £5O being handed to the club for each member gaining a flying proficiency certificate. The club must be self-sup-porting. The scheme is proving successful in training pilots and popularising flying generally.—British Official Wireless. NEW WORLD’S RECORD Rugby, October' 9. . Mrs. Elliott Lynn, the woman air pilot, at Manchester yesterday created an officially observed new world’s height record for light aeroplanes by . piloting an Avro Avian two-seater machine, with a 90 horse-power Alpha engine, to a height of 19,000 feet, or nearly four miles above the ground. She carried a man passenger The previous record of 17,283 feet was made by Lady Bailey.— British Official Wireless.
