EKWTAHUNA NOTES

The F.ketahuna Municipal Band held a very successful concert on Wednesday last before a large audience.. The programme was generous in items., and each item was received with vociferous applause. The band was under the able conductorship of Mr. T. C. Denne. The vocal items were given by M. T. Bedding, Miss E. Gooding, Messrs S. J. Smith, C. Mills, Iggulden, Venner, Wilson, and Kelly. Mesdames Jenkins and Smith gave monologue and elocutionary items, and instrumental items were played bv Messrs. Mills and Davie, Masters T. and J. Denne, Mr. L. Arnold, and Mr. T. Denne. The accompanistes were Misses Wise, Morriss, Gooding, and Mesdames Smith and Jenkins and Mr. L. Arnold. During an interval the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Page) in a speech relative to Mr. T. C Denne’s impending departure from the town, eulogised Mr. Deane’s services to the town in his capacity of band conductor. Mr. Denne had worked up a band from members who two years before had had practically no knowledge of instrumental playing. The audience then sang “For He is a Jolly Good Fellow” enthusiastically, after which Mr. Deane, in feelingly responding, wished Hie band every success in the future, and thanked the audience for their expression of appreciation. At the conclusion of the concert visiting performers, many of whom came from Masterton, were entertained at supper by band members, when opportunity was taken bv the band of presenting to Mr. Denne a travelling rug as a token of esteem. At a meeting of the Eketaliuna Bowling Club, arrangements in general were made for the opening of the season on Labour Day. Challenges for various trophies in the Manawatu Centre and invitations to outside clubs to attend, the local club’s opening dav have been issued. A rink is to play at Dannevirke on October 12, and two rinks were present at Masterton during tile past weekend. Three new members have recent I}’ been elected. The death occurred last Wednesday -of Rewa, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Souther, of Hukanui. The child contracted diptheria, and was admitted to the Pahiatua Hospital on Friday last. A euchre tournament held under tlie auspices of the Anglican Ladies Auxiliary was well attended, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Prizes "ere won by Mrs. S. Daniel and Mr. G. Vosseller. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Grinlinton’ and Greathead and Miss Anderson.
