BOWLS
PETONE CLUB The thirty-second opening of the I’etone Bowling Club’s green took place on Saturday afternoon under ideal weather conditions, and in the presence ot a large assembly of members, ladies, visitors, and the official representatives ot many clubs. The new president, Mr. J. W. Longman, extended a hearty welcome to all, especially to the new members. Referring to - the Daylight Saving measure, he said it- would prove a great boon, and he had pleasure in recording their appreciation of Mr. Sidey’s persistent twenty years' effort. Ho also made reference to the new competition for tho coming season. The inter-club banner tourney, confined to the clubs of the Hutt Valley, which he anticipated would be the means of establishing a competition between the Valley clubs, thus obviatifig ’ the loss of time travelling, both for the city and loial players. He saw no reason why there should not be a subK:entre of the parent centre, Wellington, to control tho interests of the 300 bowlers and more of the Valley.
Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., and Mrs. Wilford, tho Mayor (Mr. McKenzie), and the president of the Wellington Centre (Mr. M. Marks) also visited the green during the afternoon.
Mrs. Longman, the wife of the president, sent down the first jack, ana the president, tho first bowl, after which the president declared the green opened for the season 1927-28.
Afternoon tea was dispensed in the pavilion, after which the members participated in a game, president v. vicepresident.
