GYMNASTIC DISPLAY
.WELLINGTON GIRLS’ COLLEGE . The part played by physical drill in the education' of the modern girl was depicted at the Opera House last cvetiing, when the pupils attending the Wellington Girls’ College gave their annual gymnastic display. A capacityhouse greeted the performers, included among the audience being Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson and Mrs. J. G. Coates. TJie display was given under the direction of Dlrs. Taylor, and monotony, so usual with such entertainments, was avoided Items were given by the different forms in the school, the ,canoe poi by the girls of Form V being one of the outstanding items on the programme. An exhibition of freemovement exercises was also given by old girls of the college. In addition to the Swedish exercises there were numerous novelty dances, which made up a cleverly-acted playlet based on the fairy folk tales of the Maori. The cast of characters was as follows: —Ngatoro-i-Rangi (Maori chief), Zenocrate Henderson; Wairthu (follower of Ngatoro), Roma Eurge; other followers, Phyllis Lewthwaite and Pbvllis Carton; Maori men and maidens, fifth forms; Sir John Hawkins (captain of English ship, The Falcon), Helen Beven; Rose (his daughter), Joan Dlaunder; crew of The Falcon, Forms VI and V; Pirate chief, Joan Anderson, V A ; first officer, Roma Burge, V.A.; other pirates, Form V; crew of The Jolly Roger, ex-girls ; Spanish prisoners of the pirates, ex-girls and Forms VI and V; fairy queen, Dladge Cimino; Te Pupa (God of Fire), lola Bradshaw.
