LADIES’ GOLF TOURNEY

MISS D. HORTON BEATS MISS 0. KAY MRS. GUY WILLIAMS PLAYS WELL “Dominion” Special Service. Palmerston North, October 1. Brilliant sunshine prevailed again on Saturday, when on the course of the Manawatu Golf Club at Hokowhitu the second round of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championships was played The main feature of the day’s games was the defeat of Miss 0. Kay (Dunedin), who on Friday established a new record for the course, by Miss D. Horton, who hails from Titirangi, Auckland. Mrs. Guy Williams, Masterton’s champion player, had little difficulty in defeating Miss R. E. Gambrill (Wellington), while Mrs. Dodgshun (Dunedin) showed better form. Miss S. Acheson (Nelson) was defeated by Miss E. Culling (Auckland). Miss V. Upham, champion of the Miramar Club, beat Miss A. Treadwell (Hutt).

Good golf was forthcoming in the Mrs. Guy Williams—Miss R. F. Gambrill encounter. The ex-New Zealand champion was right on her game and though Miss Oambrill was playing a longer ball, Mrs. Guy Williams had an advantage in her approach shots. One of the surprises of the day was the defeat of Miss O. Kay, who yesterday lowered the par for tho course by two strokes, at the hands of Miss DHorton (Titirangi). Miss Horton s forte was her putting. Another closely contested match was that between Miss V. Upham (Miramar) jind Mrs. A. Treadwell (Hutt). A good match was that played by Miss E. Culling (Auckland) and Miss S. Acheson (Nelson). Miss Culling was six up at tho tenth. Miss Acheson took the next four. Another surprise was the defeat of Miss K. Bristed (Christchurch) at the hands of Mrs. D. Stout (Wellington) Miss Bristed represented tho South Island against tho North Island on Thursday and it was thought that she would account for Mrs. Stout, who is a seven handicap player. Mrs. Stout played a longer- ball than did Miss Bristed, but the latter’s putting was better than her opponent’s. Mrs. Stout yesterday annexed the Coronation medal and reduced her handicap and it will be interesting to see how she will faro against Mrs. Dodgshun, who she is duo to play in the third round of the championship. A bogey handicap match resulted in a win for Mrs. W. D. Cooke (Wellington) with a handicap of 11, 2 up. Miss M. White- (Napier (handicap 9), tied for second place with Miss F. Guy (Manawatu), handicap 13, both 1 up. Miss 31. Payton (Rotorua) equalled bogey for 18 holes, thereby reducing her handitie resulted in to-day’s putting competition, both Miss C. Richardcon and Miss O. Kay doing 14, and will play off for first place on Monftiss B. Gaisford, of Marton, won the approach and putting competition. On Monday the third round of the championship will be played and the ladies’ Golf Union’s challenge bowl will bo decided in ths afternoon.
