CITY COUNCIL’S REVENUE

, (To tho Editor.) Sir, —As a ratepayer of thirty years’ standing, I have always believed in a progressive policy. Year after year my rates have been increased, until they have now reached the maximum as far as lam concerned. Revenue obtained by the Citv Council, and wisely handled, should be more than sufficient for the city’s requirements. Ihe remark made bv the Mayor regarding the hospital rate “over which the council has no control,” is correct, but why is no vigorous protest made by the council to remedy the position? The present hospital rate is the limit, and the amount involved to run 'his institution is such that Parliament should intervene. The powers vested in this body should be immediately inquired into and altered. Alay I ask why some of our members of Parliament have not moved in this matter a very serious one. The' council is circularising householders urging the ratepayers to vote for the further loan of £290,800 to be raised on the London money market! Wily not try locally ? Trusting that your valuable and wide-ly-circulated paper will give the public (particularly the ratepayers) a little more information regarding hospital and civic expenditure.—l aai, etc., OVERBURDENED RATEPAYER. Wellington, September 14.
