ACCLIMATISATION
WELLINGTON SOCIETY. The Wellington Acclimatisation Societymet last night. Mr. J. P. Phillips, who was awarded the recently inaugurated Fish Culture Fellowship, was present. The meeting decided that everything should be done to help Mr. Phillips, with special reference to the compilation of data about any streams under study. Members expressed their willingness to help Mr. Phillips personally. It was mentioned that the Auckland branch was importing mallard ducks, but the Wellington and Christchurch societies were doing their best to kill off the mallard, as it was known that a cross between that and the grey duck produced a most vicious species. A letter was received from Mr. Hammond Murray, Levin, who suggested that Lake Papaitonga be stocked with trout. At present it was barren of fish, although they should thrive in it, hs stated. Tho matter was referred o the Fish Committee for consideration. Mr. IV. G. Talbot moved that a recommendation be forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs to the effect that in instances where a conviction follows a prosecution for unlawful opossum trapping or the illegal use of cyanide poison, no further license be granted that person for two years or until such time as that person should furnish the society with adequate evidence why his license should be renewed. The motion was carried unanimously.
Mr. C. I. Dasent, the secretary, stated that no fewer than 26,000 deer had been killed during the last few years in an effort to reduce the numbers.
