HARD HITTING
BY NEW ZEALAND IN LAST MATCH FINISHING THE TOUR IN WORTHY MANNER GOOD START BY LEVESONSOWER’S TEAM Br Telegraph.-Press CopyrightLondon, September 12. The New Zealanders, who have earned a reputation as very keen and hardhitting exponents of the care-free amateur style of cricket, are finishing up their tour in worthy manner against a team consisting mainly of first-class amateurs. The performance of the tourists was a splendid exhibition of cricket for the sake of the game and not for the sake of the result.
At the cud of the first day’s play in the match with Leveson.-Gower’s Eleven at Scarborough, New Zealand had compiled 394 runs tor five wickets. Blunt was out for 131. and the not-out batsmen were Mills (148) and Lowry (4). Blunt’s innings is still much talked of. Ho hit everything with a terrific crack from the centre ot the bat, clearing the heads of the covers in very expert manner, but in the latter stages of his innings he became more careless. The masterpiece, however, was Mills's exhibition, the left-hander showing his best style in pulling balls from the middle of his wicket and in glancing the leather to fine leg. ' To-day he failed to add many more runs, his fine effort ending at 152. Scoring shots in compiling this big total included eleven 4’s and six 3’s.
Lowry was indisposed, and unable to continue his innings. The remaining wickets fell quickly. Janies carrying his bat tor 18. The innings, which occupied 345 minutes, realised 447 runs. No fewer than seven members of Leveson-Gower's team were tried with the ball, and the wickets were shared by Haig, Mercer, Clay, and A. Gilligan. In commencing the reply Dawson and Arnott gave Leveson-Gower's team a good start, and Wyatt supported with a good contribution. In 100 minutes 95 runs were scored, Dawson’s 53 including seven 4’s.
The arrival of Princess Mary at 4.30 p.m. temporarily stopped play, the spectators rushing 'the ground to see the Princess. When the tea adjournment was taken the home team’s score stood at 156 for four wickets, Dawson, Arnott, Wyatt, and Haig having been dismissed. When play was resumed two more wickets leil cheaply, Arthur Gilligan failing to score, and Luthoven being stumped by James when be hud made only seven runs. The third, fourth, firm, and sixtli wickets had fallen lor a matter of 33 runs, but Douglas and E. W. Gilligan then made a sound stand, putting on 31 runs in 50 minutes without being beaten. With the total at 207 for six wickets the day s play ended, leaving the New Zealanders in an excellent position. -following ate the details:— NEW ZEALAND. —First Innings. Dempster, b. A.
