TROUBLED CHINA
_4 STRICT MARITAL LAW AT HANKOW
FEARS OF RISING OF EXTREMISTS
Shanghai, September 12.
On account of fears of an uprising of extremists, strict martial law is being enforced at Hankow. All Chinese are prohibited from appearing in the streets of the native quarter, whence trouble is expected, owing to the absence of the main Hankow armies participating in the Nationalists resumed drive towards Shantung, which is reported to be progressing in their favour. The Chinese authorities at Hankow have advised the French municipality to barricade its concession. French marines have been landed, and are picketing the concession. Several minor disturbances occurred between the military and Communists, aud stabbings and bomb-throwings. There were few casualties. The military arc patrolling the streets in full strength, dealing harshly with agitators. It is considered that the foreign naval forces at Hankow are sufficient to meet the worst situation likely to arise.
