DAYLIGHT SAVING

NO COMPROMISE REACHED RESUMPTION OF OPPOSITION “FIGHT TO THE LAST DITCH” No compromise has been reached between the opponents and supporters of the Daylight Saving Bill, and the present in-i tention is, if Air. Sidey will not concede the exemptions sought, to resume the opposition when the Bill is further considered in Committee in the House of Representatives to-day.

"We were caught napping last time,” remarked one member yesterday, “but we have organised our forces now, and we are prepared to fight the Bill to the last ditch. All our amendments are ready.” Mr. A. M. Samuel (Ohincinuri), in discussing the matter, said his opposition was on account of a principle. He was fighting for the farmer, the farmer’s wife and children, and the farmer’s employees.. “It is class legislation,” he added, “and as long as there is a kick left I will oppose it.”

It is understood that Mr. Sidey is definitely’ opposed to granting any additional exemptions ana considers that sufficient alterations have already been made to the measure as originally drafted.

Officials of the Railway Department made special investigations into the possibility of adjusting time-tables to meet the objections of the dairy factories and cream carters, and a report on the subject, it is stated, has been prepared. The Department, it is understood, finds itself in the position of being able to make amendments to the time-running schedule in the districts affected in the South Island and in most of the places in the North Island. In about four districts in the North Island, however, the adjustment of trains would be unduly costly, and in those instances it would be a case of the people adapting themselves to the altered conditions.

This report presumably will not alter Mr. Sidey’s intentions.
