PAHIATUA NOTES

Pahiatua, September 12.

At the spring flower show, to be held to-morrow, Mr. A. Eddie will judge the flower section; Mrs. F. E. B. Wicks (Eketahuna), the decorative classes; and Mrs. A. East, the home industries.

Sergeant-Majors R. H. Perrett (Dannevirke)- and J- L. Milburn (Hastings) have been in the district fof the past week giving the local cadets their annual physical training and musketry instruction. Major F Wood, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, inspected the cadets, and expressed satisfaction at the way they were acquitting themselves, and the standard of efficiency they had reached. In the musketry competition for the Lady Godley cup, Lance-Corporal C. L Smith was the winner, scoring 104 out of a possible 120. The runners-up were Cadets J. Hutcheson and R- W. Twentyman. Mr. A. A. Vaughan, manager of the local branch of the W.F.C.A., and Mrs. Vaughan, are spending a holiday in Napier. The Pahiatua Racing Club has decided to expend a sum of £250 in grading the racecourse proper, providing additional steps in 1 front of the people’s stand, and carrying out other improvements

A settler of Eketahuna, Mr. E. Jvde, met with a very unfortunate accident on Saturday. In company with his son, he was on his way to procure a load of wood for a sick neighbour. The horse he was driving, a young animal, suddenly becamq very restive, and, in attempting to prevent it from going over a bank, Mr. Jyde was violently pitched out of the dray, falling heavily on his ritrht hand, which was badlv smashed The sufferer was immediately conveyed to the Pahiatua Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the hand.
