PETONE UNEMPLOYED

MORE MONEY REQUIRED

SPECIAL MEETING TO BE * CALLED A deputation waited on. last nights meeting of the Petone Borough Courier! asking for assistance towards providing more work for the unemployed. The Rev. J. A. Lochore stated that the committee’s funds had practically run out. “There was a good deal of money got together,"' he said, “but now it’s practically gone. All told, £2200 has been raised, but only a little over £6O remains. With labour and material the beach cost £1592, the Koro Koro road £165, Udy Street £124, general work £123, South Street £5B, the Recreation Ground £37, and the entrance £53. Unless we have ■ some more money by to-morrow," went on the spokesman, "the good work will liave to stop, for the men will leave off at noon. It will be a great pity, for the work done i. a valuable asset to Petone, and will even be more so in the days to come. What we require is anything from another £5OO to £lOOO. Under tho circumstances I ask that this council hold a special meeting to consider tho question after the public citizens’ meeting on Thursday evening." This was agreed to by the council, the Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) saying that in the meantime as many men would be kept working as -possible.
