“BUY DOMINION GOODS”
WHAT THE FARMERS THINK. “Has this remit' been inspired by the Manufacturers’ Association?” asked a delegatp at the annual conference yesterday of the New /Zealand Farmers’ Union, when it was moved, on behalf of the Otago branch, “That this conference urges farmers to buy, wherever possible, goods made in New, Zealand, so that the value of our importations may be kept down.” Mr. A." E. Harding (Dargayille) said that New Zealand lived c-u its ’ exports. “If we are not going to import,” he said, “how are We going to get our exports away. Why, the thing is ridiculous. Tariffs only injure the countries which impose them. If yon think you are going to get the people in the Old Country to send out empty ships to take otir -produce away, then, I say, you are making a grave mistake.” Mr. J. H. Joll (Havelock North) : What about the enormous amount of money we are sending to America. How does that benefit our position? Captain F. Colbeck (Morrinsville): Why do you buy American goods ? Because it' suits you. It is exactly the same with nations as it is with individuals. Mr. W. W. Mulholland (Darfield) said he was surprised at the storm of protest against the remit. In his opinion, New Zealand industries should be encouraged. After further discussion, the remit was withdrawn.
