The raiders have repeatedly penetrated the defences, found their objectives, bombed them, and returned to their bases. Already London lias been proved easily bombable by day or night. Had the attack been real, large areas would have been laid waste. Defending ’planes have been aloft all day, but layers of clouds have prevented the discovery of the raiders. Pilots who attacked the German raiders in war-time report 'that they have particularly missed the assistance of anti-aircraft batteries, which in' actual warfare enormously assist" Ti’ic pilots in locating hostile machines. The upper layers of clouds arc so high that the bombers are able to attack targets from 15,000 feet. Out of six raids launched, two failed owing to the weather, two reached their objectives without being intercepted, and two were engaged iu combat and adjudged to have been destroyed. AIR PORTS FOR UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HELP FOR CITIES Washington, July 26. Speaking at Rapid City, President Coolidge said that he intends to/ pursue a policy of encouraging every city and town in the United States to establish its own air port. He has issued orders to the Commerce Department and the Aviation' Board to assist to promote in every possible way the creation of suitable commercial lauding fields. The President holds the view that the Federal Government cannot appropriate funds for such fields, but will leave their establishment to localities, while the Federal Government will devote itself to the general promotion of aviation. WOULD-BE FLYERS TO LONDON REFUSED PERMISSION (Rec. July 27, 7.50 p.m.) Ottawa, July 26. A message from Toronto states 'that ■the Hon. W. Finlayson, Minister of Forests, of Ontario, announced tonight that the Government had refuted permission for Captains Maxwell and Tully, employed in aeroplane patrol work, to attempt a flight to London in the August-September season, as the fire menace is then at its height.
