UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
ASCERTAINING VOLUME DETAILED INQUIRIES INSTITUTED The appointment of a special officer from his own Department to make detailed inquiries concerning the volume of unemployment in the Dominion and as to the best means of co-ordinating the relief works efforts, was announced in the House of Representatives yesterday by the Prime ATinistcr (Right Hon. J. G. Coates), when replying to a question as to whether the Government considered that sufficient was being done to meet the situation. Mr. Coates said Hie investigations would cover every phase of uticniplbyment in the Dominion and every avenue of employment offering. Charts would be prepared which would enable the Government to keep in touch with the situation daily. The appointment had been made because of the fact that there were so many varying estimates as to the extent of unemployment, and it was difficult to say exactlv what the position was. The Labour Department had one set of figures, the trades halls another lot, and the local todies a third set. From the information which it was hoped to gather it should be possible to direct men wherever work was offering. THE MAYOR’S .FUND Additional donations to tlio Mayor’s unemployment fund are as follow:— .£ s. d.
UNEMPLOYED EX-SOLDIERS AT AUCKLAND
GRANT FROM CANTEEN FUND BOARD Dominion Special Service. Auckland, July 27. A grant of. £l2OO to relieve distress caused by unemployment among exsoldiers in Auckland province has been made by the Canteen and Regimental Trust Funds Board. The spending of the grant is to be administered by the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association. The money has come very opportunely, as applications for assistance from unemployed men have been verv heavy this winter and the association’s available funds, obtained by a collection on Poppy Day, are practically exhausted. The grant from the Canteen Funds Board is therefore particularly welcome, as it will help to tide the men over the last pinch of winter.
