Purchas, and H Godtschalk dropped nut of the loca, team at tho last moment. Good progress was made during tho evening The operating was in the hands of Messrs. F. W Rivers (Wellington), aud C. T. MeAloon (Christchurch). Mr. M. 11. McLeod umpired for Wellington, and Mr. W Tooinath for the Canterbury Chess Club Messrs H. Anderson and J. M. Deck acted as tho local scrutineers. The Can terbury Club won the toss, and thus had first riiovo at the odd-numbered boards. Only one gamo was finished, Mr. A. AV Gyles scoring for AA'ellingten at 9.30 p.nt., amidst applause. He instituted a crushing attack, which gained a bishop at move 14. his opponent resigning a hopeless game shortly afterwards. Messrs. W E. Mason. A. E. Jessup, and G. A. Hurley havo gained advantages for the local club, but on tho other hand Wellington .is two pawns down at board 1. and one pawn down at board 17. The remaining fourteen games arc in a very even state There should be some interesting play when tho match is concluded on Monday evening. Tho score at the first twelve boards counts for tho club championship of the Dominion.
