HOMELESS, FRIENDLESS AND DESTITUTE Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, July 26. Out of work, homeless, friendless and quite destitute, George Bollam, a youth of eighteen years, weary of looking for work that ho could not find, went to the police station and asked to be taken into custody- His only crime was that ho lacked food and a home. Accordingly ’ Bollam appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on the stereotyped charge with which such cases are met—that of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. “This young man/* tho Magistrate was told, '‘landed at Auckland on January 15, 1927. Since then he has been knocking about the North Island, looking for work and unable to get it. While in Coromandel he got into trouble for taking a horse, and got 25 days. He came from Wellington to Lyttelton, working his passage; he went to Blenheim, but was unable to get work there, and finally he gave himself up here as destitute. He is only lb years ° f Tho e 'Rcv. P. Revell said that he would do his best to seo that the young man got work. He would be well looked after till he got work. The Magistrate: It seems a pity to send him to gaol. Mr. Revell: I think so. lam prepared to do my best for him- ... The Magistrate (to accused): You will be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Mr. Revell has kindly consented to try to get you work, so put your best foot forward. We do not want a lad like you out of work in New Zealand Have you any relatives in New Zealand? Accused: No, Sir. ’ The Magistrate: Well, if you work hard you will soon make friends.
