SPEED OF SERVICE CARS

COMPLAINT TO COUNTY • COUNCIL

The speed of service cars and other vehicles when travelling through the Ngahauranga Gorge was the subject of a complaint received from the Wellington Automobile Club by the Makara County Council at its meeting yesterday. The club suggested that some means of putting a stop to the practice should be taken by the county. The matter was one that needed very serious consideraion. as the ever-increasing motor traffic made it absolutely dangerous for speeding to continue. The chairman (Air, E. Wi.ndley) : “Some members of the Automobile Club are not above speeding themselves.” The county clerk (Air. W, L. Beech) remarked that as far as speeding in the gorge was concerned the Public Works’ surfacemen had complained that the worst offender was a member of the Automobile Chib. He had. however, been assured bv officials of the Public Works Department that speeding had been reduced considerably through the gorge. The chairman stated that speeding was fairlv frequent 011 the main roads outside the gorge. He did not think the council could do much in the way of stopping the practice unless thev had an inspector continually on the road. , , ~ The matter was finally referred to the Works ’ Committee to bring down any recommendations they may arrive at.
