SOME GOOD PRICES FIRST NATIONAL SALE AT TRENTHAM A new' era in yearling and bloodstock sales in New Zealand wrns commenced Yesterday with the first of the national sales, which aro intended to bo an annual event, in conjunction with tho summer meeting of the Wellington. Racing Club. The lots put up to auction comprised yearlings and older horses, but the main feature of the sale, as it will also be in future, was the yearlings, which included those from the Dominion’s most representative studs., Iliere was a large attendance, including the personal and proxy representation ot Australian sportsmen. Prices took a wide range, four figures being obtained for tho best lots, while some went for a

mere song. Several new’ owners were operating, and some of the lots so secured will be trained at Trentham. The Auckland trainers J. T. Jamieson and J. Buchanan operated freely for their patrons. The highest price of the sale was given by the latter trainer for the bay colt by Absurd—Bronze (brother to Gleuross, Grotesque, and Anklet), (bred by Mr. G. M. Currie). It took 1025 guineas to secure him. This colt was on Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Messrs. Chisholm and Company’s catalogue. This price was closely followed by the 1000 guineas given by Messrs. J. C. and P. S. Gleeson, of Auckland for the brown gelding by Solfenno—Rose Red (brother to Muscari, and hallbrother to Raceful and Zouave), which was sold by Messrs. Pyne, Gould and Guinness, Ltd. and Messrs. Wm. Inglis and Son, for Mr. J. F. Reid, of the Burnside Stud. Mr. A. B. Williams gave 900 guineas for the bay colt by Paladin —Sweet Charity. The bay colt bv Kilbroney out of the New Zealand and Wellington Cup winner Oratress, brought 800 guineas, beingjmrcliased by the Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan for a new patron. The brown colt by Paper Money—Puttee, half-orother to Killocra, brought 775 guineas, from Melbourne, a similar price being obtained for tho bay filly by Paper Money —Epitaph. Mr. G. D- bre £ u " ■ wood gave 725 guineas for the bay colt bv Absurd from Cherry Mart, a half-brother to Mandane, and Mr. W. Scholium, of Auckland, got lor the same price a chestnut filly full-sister to A.grion (Limond-Waterwings). ,ipe bay colt by Martian from Songbird s sister Kildee was passed at 800gns. Two lots at GOOgns. were the brown gelding bv Leighton—Blended, bought by Mr E. L. Pciddiford, and the brown colt by Paladin from War Lady, a close relation of Star Stranger and Naos. Mr. H. P. F. Blundell, of Wellington, owner of Diogenes, gave 700gns. for the bay colt half-brother by Tea Tray to Gas. bag. The auctioneer for Messrs. Pyno, Gould, Guinness. Ltd., and Messrs. William Inglis and Son was Mr. Reg. Inglis, of Sydney, and for Mesrs. Wright, Stephenson and Messrs. Chisholm and Co. Mr. Ken. Austin, i-.lso of Sydney. The list of lots was a very long one, and the sale occupied the whole of ths day. SALE A SUCCESS MR. KEN. AUSTIN’S OPINIONS. The sale concluded at 6 p.m. Mr. Austin, in returning thanks to his audience, expressed the opinion that the sale had been particularly successful for an initial attempt. Next year, with more experience, everything might be expected to go with greatdr smoothness, but taking it all in all, the sale had been very successful right through.
