WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT FIRST DAY’S PLAY The Wellington- provincial tournament was commenced yesterday on the association courts nt- lliraniar, in fine weather. In the aiternoon a. northerly wind interfered .lightly with many players’ accuracy. That so few matches were played was duo to the fact that many competitors were unable to get the necessary time of! from their work. The notable defeat of the day was that of J[. L. Lampe and Miss M. East in the mixed doubles championship at tho hands of Mr. 11. McL. Ferkins and Miss E. JI. Jladcley. In the ladies’ doubles championship Miss Foster (partnered by Miss Travers) was called upon to servo in one game, which ran to 12 deuces before sh# won it. DANNEVIRKE TOURNAMENT

Dnnncvirke, January 20. A change Of the weather and the setting iu of a fine drizzle this morning prevented play in the Dannevirke Lawn Ttentiis Club’s annual iourney, until the afternoon when finality was reached in the combined doubles, both championships and handicap and iu the men's A grade handicap singles. The combined championship doubles was played off between the Dannevirke representatives, N. P. Green and Mrs. Green. Robson (Auckland) and Miss Lowry (Hastings), IT. W. Gieseu (Napier) ami Miss A. Howe (Wellington) who also were in tho running, having defaulted to the, latter. The contest; proved quite a good one. but. the local players had to give way to the visitors. Robson and Miss Lowry winning 7—5, 6—3. The combined handicap doubles, alter several defaults resulted ill Sandral aud Jliss Haggifl (Palmerston North), owe 19, meeting Dr. Christie and Jliss Calver (Wanganui) (scr.), in the final when iliev suffered defeat, the game ending 70—67, in favour of the M’aiiganui pair. The men's handicap singles A grade resulted in a win for the local player, W. Shirley (owe 5). who mot Burkinan (e.wo 15), of Wanganui, and defeated him 60-51. , , The ladies’ handicap doubles resolved itself into final contest between Misses Calver and Myers (scr.); of Wanganui, nnd Misses Fannin and Ilaggifi: (scr.), of Napier and Palmerston, respectively. As the players wore engaged in the doubles it; was agreed to defer the deciding match until competitors moot al; the Masterton tourney which follows on directly. There remains now only the concluding stages oi the mens handicap doubles to be got otl. Tho tournament was exceedingly fortunate iu its weather, lor until this morning tho matches were never interfered with.
