LAYING OF POISON

The fact that it is illegal to laypoison anywhere within a borough was made clear in the Magistrate’s Court to-dav when Louis Melhose was charged with laving strychnine adjacent to a public place in North Avenue, Devonport. , , ~ , , Senior-Sergeant Edwards said defendant laid poison to kill cats. was an offence to lay poison anywhere in a borough, whether adjacent in a public place or not. * The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt, imposed a fine of £5. Defendant later appealed for a reduction of the fine, stating that last year a number of his valuable chickens iind been killed by cats. This year he laid poison for ca'ts, but the dogs got through the fence. The chemist from whom he obtained poison told him it was permissible to lav it on his own propertv. 'flic Borough Council openlv advertised that it would give away poison lo kill rats. The fine was reduced to one pound.
