$ SENIOR COMPETITION Palmerston North, December 4. The concluding matches in the first round of the Manawatu senior cricket competition were commenced to-day, under favourable conditions. RAILWAY v. OLD BOYS. In the match, Railway v. Old Boys, Mullins and McViear opened tor Railway, and their partnership was productive of 36. At this figure, both batsmen havini- made things willing. Mullins was caught by Barrett, off Spring, for 20. Gallichan partnered McViear, but failed to make a score, being bowled by Spring shortly after bis arrival. Leet and McViear became associated, and the latter proceeded to knock up ru.ug in great style, taking the lion’s share in this respect. The board showed 64 when at length Leet was dismissed for 7. Hollier, who was next in, managed to compile 3, but Selector Onglev succumbed to the trundling of Black before breaking bis duck, which left the aggregate at 67. Kells joined McViear. and the two hung together well, the figures being changed to 109 when Kells returned to the pavilion, having placed one into the hands of Deiderich off Spring. Kells' contribution of 23 contained a six and a five, and two fours. With McViear still going strong, and past the 70 mark. Ingham went in and again the score mounted 'steadily. McViear had hard luck in nut reaching his century. Brophy catching him out off Deiderick when 92, making the total 208. Ingham's subsequent dismissal for 56. after a commendable exhibition, brought the total for the innings up to 212. Old Boys’ opening was not too auspicious. the first wicket falling for 4. when Barrett, who opened with Broughton, was disposed of for 2. Spring stayed to notch but a single. Scoring commenced in earnest when Deiderich and Broughton became associated. The latter was eventually dismissed when ho had reached 44, the total at this juncture being 53. Deiderich continued batting with Hope, hut when the latter had knocked up eleven he wns bowled by Gallicbon. Deiderich was stumped by Leet off Gallichnn. for 21. nnd dumps were drawn at 70 for six wickets. U.S.A, v. HIGH SCHOOL Tn the other senior match R.S.A. contested honours with High Schoo] and batted first. Perrin and McSweeney constituted the opening partnership and with Smillie and Seymour sharing the bowling, runs came slowly at first. The batsmen soou became well set and it was only when they had compiled 42 between them that Roach found McSweeney’s wicket when that worthy had knocked up 27. When Cooper and Perrin became associated, however, they accomplished even more. Boundary hits were well sprinkled among the score rind the board at length showed 133, when Perrin was caught bv Spelmnn off Young and sent back to the pavilion with 58 to his credit. At 178 Cooper, after a splendid innings, was dislodged by Roach, and his 70 was the highest score of the innings. The remaining batsmen were disposed of for little, the fall of the last wicket finding R.S.A. with 203 to the'r credit.

The innings bad been n lengthy one. so that High School had but a short time in wh : nh to get under way. Pirch nnd Young handled tho willow in opening. the latter’s wicket falling for 8 at 15.
