SANDERS CUP

PEGGY WINS AGAIN. The fifth of tlie Wellington Sanders Cup trials was held last evening, although the wind was very light, so light, in fact, that it was all the vachts could do to cover the last three hundreds yards of the race. Ihe course was from the starting line between the end of the Clyde Quay wharf .and the end of the boat-harbour wall to the Coromandel buoy, from there to the P°'nt Jerningham buoy, and from there back to the starting lino. The three yachts got way together at 6.45, and set out in a line on a clear run to Coromandel. Their spinnakers were put out immediately, and AH Black managed to get a slight lead on Wellesley, with Peggy occupying the third position. Wellesley, however, took All Black’s wind, and was thus able to draw slightly ahead of her. there was little to choose between the boats, however, and by the Thorndon breastwork All Black was only three-quarters of a length ahead of Wellesley. All Black and Wellesley took in their leaders, nnd the yachts were all very close together when they approached the Coromandel buoy. Spinnakers were taken and Peggy rounded the buoy at 6hrs. 7 min. 35sec.. All Black nt 6hrs. 7mm. 45 sec., and Wellesley at 6hrs. 7min. 46sec. On the beat to Jerningham. Peggy soon proved her capabilities, and gradually increased her lead on the other two yachts. When about thirty yards ahead of Wellesley, she took a couple of short boards in order to get on the weather berth. She then quickly drew away, until over a hundred yards separated the boats, with All Black some thirty vards behind Wellesley. Peggy was the first to get round the Jerningham buoy, which she did at 6hrs. 22mm. 45sec., Wellesley following at 6hrs. 27min., ano All Black at 6hrs. 2fimin. 15sec. When about a hundred yards past the buoy, Peggy was temporarily ' becalmed. She got the wind shortly, however, and headed for the . middle of the harbour, while All Black hugged the shore, on the chance of getting the shore breeze. After some time Peggy turned about, and headed for the starting line. At this stage it began to look as if Peggy had lost her chance of winning the race, as the other boats had cot the 1 sea breeze along the shore. • All Black, which shortly before had been some fif’-YYards behind, gradually got ahead of Wellesley, and by' the time the Oriental Bay band rotunda was parsed she was fifty yards ahead of her. Contrary to expectations'. Peggy nicked up considerably, and it soon became obvious that she would win the race. The wind dropped almost eniitelv in the last stages of the race, and Peggy crossed the Imo in dead calm water at 7hrs 6min. 30sec. She was followed by All Black at 7hrs. 7min.- Ilsec., and by Wellesley at <nrs. 13min. 30sec.
