THE ZOO
SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS
■An ex-Wellington resident, who is new living in Sydney, and who recently visited his home town, writes to a friend here, giving it as his opinion that the Wellington Zoo is starved for lack of financial assistance. “I spent a good deal of time when in Wellington in your zoo,” he writes, “and I think more congenial surroundings should be found for the bears. I Consider both the City Council and the Government should provide more financial support for the Wellington Zoo. The cages and the surroundings of the animals should be brightened tip, and turf should be grown in order that the animals could be changed over occasionally into haunts that are nearer to their natural state The lions and tigers seem to be imprisoned in their present cages If a few more comfortable seats were to be placed amongst the flowers, the zoo would be , patronised much more than it is to-day. A pit should be formed for the monkeys, and seats placed around the spider monkeys’ location. These animals in the SydnOv Zoo attract thousands every holiday. The stone work about the Wellington Zoo should be white-wash-ed in order to give the place a bright appearance. "Monev spent to-day,” he adds, “will enhance Wellington’s attractions a hundredfold iti the vears that are to come. Wellington and its environs have a wonderful future.”
