ABOUT MATERNITY MORTALITY
NEW ZEALAND’S. REDUCED RATE
Tn his speech yesterday at the Wellington Hospital the Minister of Health, Hon. J. A. Young, said the Department desired to encourage hospital boards to open maternity wards in country districts wherever possible. New Zealand was now-steadily reducing its maternal mortalitv rate. In 1924, for every 1000 births, there was a loss of five mothers from puerperal causes; in Denmark the rate was 2.06, the lowest; in Netherlands, 2.58; Belgium, 5.68; Scotland, 6.27; England and Wales, 3.95; South Africa, 4.17: Irish Free States, 5.02; Northern Ireland, 5.25; Germauv, 5.04; United States, 7.58; Canada, 5.53; Australia, 4.96. Tn 1925 the New Zealand figure fell to 4.65, and the Minister stated that he would not be satisfied until it came down to below 3 per 1000 births. Mention .was also, made of the fact that the mortality rate was lower in the cities and town districts, than in rural or country districts, the figures being as follow:—
