THE MAYORAL CONTEST
A VISITOR’S VIEWS. Sir,—As a visitor to your city I am greatly interested in your forthcoming Mayoral election as set out by your various correspondents. It is refreshing to one from the Old Country to note the vigorous spirit and interest displayed by your citizens in the election while it is still five months oil'. I must say, however, that I regret to note that your correspondents, while all writing that they require the best man, nnd so on, all display a deplorable party spirit. As one who has had considerable experience of municipal matters in England, I can confidently say that in any election, but more particularly in a Mayoral one, the main thing is to elect the right man, whether he be the wielder of a pick or a merchant prince. The party spirit usually results in tho election of a men whose election, while giving satisfaction to his party at the time, mostly proves costly to the city.— I am, etc., _ EZRA CHANDLER. Wellington. November 29.
