WANGANUI NOTES

Dominion Special. Wanganui, November 26. Concerning the strange case of “suspended animation” reporte i from the Maori Pah at Kaiwhaiki at Wanganui, a nurse related a similar instance in this case. The corpse had been laid opt for 48 hours, when the chest of the deceased was found to be quite hot. A doctor was summoned, but he too was baffled by the presence of heat in the dead body. After a thorough postmortem examination, it was discovered that certain chemical action had commenced after death as the result of the disease to which the person had succumbed, and several degrees of heat had been generated. Botli the Castlecliff and Central Fire Brigades participated in. a highly spectacular demonstration last evening before Captain T. Hugo, Dominion Inspector of Fire Brigades. In charge of Superintendent J. H. Williams, the firemen displayed wonderful fitness and agility in performing their various exacting tests. At the conclusion of the demonstration the Superintendent and men were warmly congratulated by Captain Hugo on their high standard of efficiency. Interested spectators at the demonstration were members of the Wanganui City Council. Fire Board, and Fire Police. Kena Puneti appeared on remand at the Magistrate’s Court to-dav charged with alleged carnal knowledge at an up-river settlement. Don Broughton, from the same locality, was also charged with alleged indecent assault. The police asked for a further remand till December 9, which was granted. Three other young Maoris from the same locality will also be dealt with on the same day. During the recent fine weather some fanners in the district commenced to cut their hay. They are now apprehensive regarding the broken weather which is most unsuitable for wilting the crop. Most of the hay fields are ready for cutting, and there is an abnormal growth. With continued wet weather the grass will flatten out and rot. ■ ■. . Wanganui swimming authorities are endeavouring to arrange an annual swimming contest between Taranaki and Wanganui, the contests to comprise a seven-a-side polo team, a seven-a-side flying squadron race, and three picked men for diving. v Tenders will be called at an earlv date for the erection-of a new stand on Spriggen’s Park. The building will provide approximately double the seating of the present structure, and will have a row of concrete steps in front from which, a good view of the match-, es will also be obtained.
